SONYA MASSEY
(And those who were met with harm when they need help.)
On July 6, 2024, Springfield resident Sonya Massey was killed by Sangamon County sheriff deputy Sean Grayson a day after an emergency call for help was received. The caller, Sonya’s mother, made the following statements to the dispatcher:“[she] is being sporadic and she's […] having a mental breakdown or just something”; “she's not a danger to herself she's not a danger to me”; please don't [send] no combative policemen that are prejudiced, please” and “I'm scared of the police. Please. Be careful. Thank you.”.
Sonya mother’s concerns were ignored.
Sonya's family has created a fundraiser to support Sonya's children. Letters of encouragement can also be sent to the address provided in the link.
